A first-generation college graduate, the Very Rev. Dr. Edward P. Doran ’64 knows the power of a Marist education. That is why he has named the University as a beneficiary of his retirement plan, providing an unrestricted gift to assist future students.
“I came from a family where my parents had not gone to college. In fact, my brothers and sisters who were working chipped in to help me pay for my education. I want to make it easier for others from similar backgrounds to further their education as I did,” Msgr. Doran says.
While a student, Msgr. Doran says he received invaluable guidance, experiences, and support from the faculty and the University.
“I learned to not only recite information, but I learned to fully grasp complex concepts and gained further understanding,” he says. As a volunteer candidate for Brotherhood, he even worked as an electrician with the Marist Brothers during the construction of Donnelly Hall.
Serving today as a professor of counseling at St. John’s University, where he earned his PhD and retired from the Diocese of Brooklyn after 24 years as a Marist Brother and priest, Msgr. Doran is happy to know his planned gift will help tomorrow’s students. He encourages fellow alumni to do the same.
“I encourage them to give back to a school that has given them so much and do as I have done, which is to help future students get the same education, support, and encouragement that they did.”
