Lou Zuccarello was on track to becoming valedictorian at Mount St. Michael Academy, a Marist Brothers high school in the Bronx, New York, when his father passed away suddenly. Lou was 16 years old, and his mother took over the family business.
“No one in my family had been to college,” Lou remembers, “so I had no idea financial aid even existed.”
It was a Marist Brother at his school who helped Lou find a scholarship to St. John’s University. That Marist Brother, Dr. Ed Cashin ’52, later moved to Marist College and recruited Lou to the faculty in 1966. Dr. Zuccarello retired as a professor emeritus of political science in 2001 and continued teaching well into his 70s.“Getting a college degree changed the script not only for Lou, but for our three sons and their families,” says Barbara Zuccarello.
Barbara and Lou funded the Dr. Louis and Barbara Zuccarello Family Scholarship to help students realize their dreams of earning college degrees. “Marist has been our home for 56 years,” Lou says. “Barbara and I have been blessed beyond our wildest imagination. We hope others will follow our lead and make stories like ours possible for future generations.”
